  • Foam Water Mat Vs. RAVE's Whoosh

The Big Test: Water Whoosh vs. Foam Water Mat

Don’t take our word for it --- see what our “expert” testers (i.e., a group of kids we took to the lake) found out when we had them test a foam water mat versus the Water Whoosh. We challenged them to put a foam water mat and a Water Whoosh in the water and play on it, without our assistance or direction. Here are our observations:

    • Storage and transportation: When we loaded up the vehicle for the trip, the foam mat took up the entire hauling area in the SUV, but the Water Whoosh, which rolls up like a sleeping bag, left room for coolers, duffel bags, and the other stuff that the kids took with them.
Whoosh folds up to fit in compact spaces Whoosh folds up to fit in compact spaces
    • Set-up: When we got to the lake, the Water Whoosh was inflated in a few minutes and the kids carried it down to the lake shore easily, while the others with foam mat duty struggled with the weight and bulkiness of the foam mat.

    • Installation: The kids assigned to the foam mat had difficulties with the ends of the foam mat curling up, while the Water Whoosh kids plopped the anchors in the water and were playing, sliding, jumping, and swimming. Once installed, the Water Whoosh held up to their weight and rough-and-tumble use. They even convinced the family dog to join in the fun.

This confirms what a recent customer told us too: “The kids love it. It can hold several kids at once and it basically turns into a slip and slide with a little water on it.”

  • Water 101: From Splashing to Skiing, Water Tips for Kids and Parents

Tips for Making Your Kids Into Water Sports Rock Stars

Learning water basics Learning water basics

Water sports can be intimidating for young children, but with a few basic teaching techniques parents can help them overcome their anxiety and fears. Successfully introducing kids to water sports at a young age will help them become comfortable around the water and enjoy water sports for the rest of their lives.

    • Start with family fun time together in a safe environment: Simply splashing around, jumping in and out of the water, and getting acquainted with the water is a great way to start. Utilizing a stable platform such as a dock, floating mat, or water bouncer in shallow water is a good way for parents to introduce young children to the water and help them feel comfortable. Always have children wear a life vest that fits properly for their comfort and safety.
    • O-Zone XL Bouncer O-Zone XL Bouncer
    • Introduce paddle sports: Youth who are familiar with swimming and the water are ready to take on a new challenge with paddle sports such as stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. Parents should familiarize their children to paddle sports by inviting them to ride along with them, and then when the child is ready, allow them to try it themselves under supervision. As their confidence and skills grow, it is amazing how quickly most kids want to explore the water on their own.
    • Safety PFDs Safety PFDs
    • Move into boating sports: Similarly, present young children to tubing, water skiing, and wake boarding in a gradual manner. Many adults make the mistake of driving the boat too fast for young children --- for instance, for a child less than 50 pounds, suggested towboat speed for a beginner using a water ski trainer is only 10 mph and then when the skier is standing up on two skis, drivers should go only 13 mph. For tubing, drive in a gently curving pattern at 10-15 mph and keep the tube within the boat wake. As with all water sports for all ages, excessive speed is likely to cause injuries, but with children learning to enjoy water sports extreme speed will cause anxiety.

  • Five Things You Need for a Great Family Day on the Boat

Spending a day on the boat with your family has many advantages and good memories, but the best days happen because you planned ahead to make them happen that way. Here are the top five things we recommend you take along before you leave the dock:

Life vests: Safety precautions are first priority when you’re on the water, and life vests that fit everyone are at the top of that list. More than two-thirds of all boating fatalities are drowning accidents, and 90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. Life vests must be U.S. Coast Guard approved, and the laws of your state should be followed regarding the ages of children required to wear a life vest at all times.

Sun protection: Waterproof sunscreen is also important for a long day on the water in the sun, and even the best sunscreen on the market must be reapplied often. Also bring along hats, sunglasses, swim shirts and lightweight long-sleeved shirts if extra protection is needed later in the day.

Food and drinks: If you want to spend the bulk of your day on the water, bringing along snacks and cool drinks is also essential to avoid dehydration and exhaustion. Thinking ahead to reduce the amount of waste to handle on the boat is also a good idea, so we like to fill up the cooler with reusable water bottles and snacks such as fresh fruit and cheese packed in reusable containers.

Water Toys: When it’s time to jump in the water to cool off or to anchor in a quiet spot to relax, you’ll need the right toys to keep everyone occupied. Our favorite water toy is our RAVE Sports® Water Whoosh™, an inflatable water mat available in 10-, 15-, and 20-foot lengths. It folds up compactly to be tucked away easily on a boat, and comes with a hand pump so when everyone’s ready to jump on the water, it’s easily inflated. Whether you tether it to your boat with a rope or bring along two small anchors to secure it nearby, the family will spend hours playing slide and slip games, jumping, using it as a starting platform for water skiing or wakeboarding, relaxing, and swimming from it. They are manufactured with extremely durable commercial grade drop-stitch vinyl, so even the family dog can join in the fun! When everyone’s ready to motor back to the dock, simply deflate, fold up, and store away again.

Waterproof bag: Using a quality waterproof bag to keep towels, extra clothes, cell phones, cameras, and other valuables safe is always wise. The general mayhem of a day on the boat with the family can easily cause things to accidentally go overboard or get wet, and we’ve avoided many potential disasters by having a good waterproof bag for valuables and dry towels and extra clothes.

  • Need a End of Summer Boredom Buster? Try this water slide game!

If your kids are getting bored with their usual summer activities, try mixing things up with this fun water slide game.  The object of the game is to get the most points for your team by collecting objects as you slide down the slide. All you need is one or two water slides (a temporary slide made from plastic sheeting or a high-quality RAVE Sports Turbo Chute), small water tubes or RAVE Sports Turbo Sleds, gentle baby shampoo, water hose, and a variety of objects in four sizes (small, medium, large, and extra large). Objects that hold water are the best, such as Nerf balls, sponges, or Koosh balls, but anything will work. And, of course, you’ll need a bunch of kids (or young-at-heart adults).

Next, lay out the water slide in a safe area free from rocks, sticks or other debris or anything that would hurt or injure the kids such as buildings or fences. The slide should be on top of a soft surface such as grass or sand, and on a slope that is not too steep. Make sure the slide is secured well with garden stakes. If you are using a RAVE Sports Turbo Chute, follow instructions found in the Owner’s Manual for proper safety and setup.

It’s now time to start running some water down the slide through your hose and to spread out the baby shampoo to make it really, really slippery. You’ll need to continually run the hose and add shampoo periodically to keep the slide at its slipperiest. Spread the assortment of objects out on the slide, mixing up the sizes along the length of the slide. Assign point values to each size, for example, give small objects 75 points, medium objects 50 points, large objects 25 points, and extra-large objects only 10 points.

Now it’s time to get started. Divide the kids into two teams. If you have set up two slides, assign each team a slide, or if you have one slide, instruct the teams to take turns. Get ready, get set, go! Instruct the kids to go down the slide one at a time, sliding on water tubes or RAVE Sports Turbo Sleds. As the kids slide and slip down the slide, they must grab as many objects as possible to acquire the most points for their team. Only the items that they are still holding at the end of the slide count --- no points are assigned for touching an object or those items that are dropped. To make the game more difficult, adults can spray the players with water as they slide down the slide or dump buckets of water over them.

The end of summer can be a difficult time for parents to keep their kids from getting bored, but this water slide game will certainly bust that boredom!

  • Five Reasons Why We LOVE Tubing

Pulling a towable behind a speed boat means big splashes, big screams, and big-time fun. Here are our top five reasons why we love tubing:

    1) It’s a no-brainer. Tubing doesn’t require any special skills or athletic abilities. Compared to other water sports that require balance, agility and strength, with tubing all you need to do is sit or lay down and hang on.

    2) Everyone can do it. No matter if you’re young or old --- or somewhere in between --- you can enjoy water tubing. Young beginners can be pulled at a slow speed that’s right for them, while more adventurous teens and adults will enjoy faster speeds that challenge their ability to stay on the tube. With many tube styles available, there’s something for every speed and ability.

    3) It’s a fun way to get some exercise. Tubing gets you outdoors, moving around on a boat, and usually requires some amount of swimming, in addition to the muscle strength used to hang on to the tube. Beats time at an indoor gym any day, in our opinion.

    4) It introduces newbies to water sports. Tubing is an excellent way to get introduced to water sports and the experience of being towed behind a boat. Moving up to water skiing, knee boarding, or wakeboarding will be less intimidating if your family members have first experienced tubing.

    5) It doesn’t require an electronic screen. Family time nowadays is interrupted too often by phones and devices with electronic screens. If you want to spend some quality family time together without those distractions, take your family tubing!

  • Looking for things to do on the 4th of July? You'll love this ...

It’s hard to beat the 4th of July for sheer fun --- no other holiday packs fireworks, ice cream, warm weather, and family time all into one day! But sometimes it’s difficult to keep all family members entertained for a whole day together, so we thought we’d share our best ideas of things to do on the 4th of July (on the water, of course):

Enjoy the sunrise from a new point of view: Summer sunrises are usually spectacular from any viewpoint, but we especially enjoy them from the top of the water on a stand up paddle board. It’s your chance to catch some peace and quiet before the mayhem of the day begins (and to burn some calories to justify ice cream later in the day).

Use water sports to build bonds and memories:  Few activities bridge the generation gap better than jumping on a water trampoline together,  seeing who can last the longest in the boat tube, or just hangin’ out playing games on the shore --- water volleyball, anyone?

Explore new water: Be explorers for an afternoon on a kayak, canoe, or stand up paddle board and check out a new river, lake, or ocean bay. To really get into the spirit of the day, wear something red, white, and blue while you’re exploring.

Lounge around in a float: It’s your day off from work, so relax! Grab a few pool / lake floats, find a calm spot in the sun, and chill out.

Create a water gun competition: Be sure to bring along a bunch of water guns or water blasters / soakers, depending upon the ages of your family members and their risk-taking appetite, and spend the afternoon in a “friendly” competition --- on shore, on a water trampoline or bouncer, or on a boat.

Watch fireworks from a boat or the end of a dock / pier: End the day back on the water to watch surrounding fireworks from the vantage point of a boat or from the end of a dock or pier. This gives you twice the fun, as this way you can enjoy the reflections of the fireworks on the water too.

No matter what your family’s activities are this 4th of July, we hope our RAVE friends have a fun (and safe) holiday!

  • Ultimate List of Water Trampoline Games

Bouncing, jumping, tumbling, and splashing into the water are obvious things that children and young-at-heart adults enjoy doing on a water trampoline. But after hours of these activities, sometimes a little imagination is needed to go one step further to extend the fun. Here’s our ultimate list of water trampoline games to get your creativity sparked, but the fun is really only limited to your imagination!

Hot Potato: With a minimum of three players on the trampoline, all players must be jumping at all times. One player starts by throwing a ball to another player, who must catch it and throw it quickly to another player. When a player drops the ball, fails to catch it, or stops jumping to catch the ball, they are out. The last one still jumping without dropping the ball is the winner.

Trampoline Telephone: Also for a minimum of three players. All players line up around the edge of the trampoline. One player starts by going to the center of the trampoline and doing a trick, such as a one-legged bounce, a bottom drop, or a knee drop. The next child must then repeat that trick and then add a new trick of their own. The third person then performs those two tricks, and adds their own trick, and so on. The game continues until a player does not remember the sequence of tricks correctly and is out. The last player to perform all tricks in the correct sequence is the winner.

Marco Polo: For at least three players. One player sits in the middle of the trampoline with their eyes closed. The other players quietly spread out on the trampoline and sit still. The center person counts to ten out loud, then stands up with their eyes still closed and tries to tag other players. If the center person who is “it” yells out “Marco”, the other players must reply with “Polo”. When the center person touches another player, that person becomes “it” and moves to the center of the trampoline, and the game continues. An option of this game for older children is to allow players to move on and off the trampoline into the surrounding water.

Mom / Dad / Grandma / Grandpa Says: For this version of “Simon Says”, put the kids on the water trampoline while Mom or Dad or other adult supervisor stays on shore (preferably in a comfortable lawn chair with a cold drink!). The adult shouts a variety of instructions, such as “Dad says jump high!” and the kids have to jump as high as they can, or “Grandma says jump on one leg!” and the kids have to jump on one leg. Occasionally, the adult gives a command without preceding it with “Dad says” or “Mom says”, and the players must not follow the command. Any player who still performs the command is out.

Attack the Castle: This game needs a minimum of four players. Divide all players into two equal teams and put one team in the water with balls and the other team on the trampoline to defend the “castle”. The team in the water throws the balls into the castle as fast as they can, while the defenders on the trampoline have to swat the balls away. When a ball touches the trampoline’s jump mat surface, the outside team gets one point. The castle is defeated when the outsiders reach a predetermined number of points.

Crack the Egg: With a minimum of three players, have one child be the “egg” by sitting in the middle of the trampoline with their legs crossed and knees close to their chest. The other players jump and bounce to make the “egg” let go of their legs.

Slithering Snake: The first player places a jump rope across the surface of the water trampoline and moves it back and forth to make it slither. The other players try to jump over the jump rope without touching the “snake”. When someone gets “bitten” by the snake, they become the player to move the jump rope.

Follow the Leader: Great for younger children. Players take turns being the leader and perform a trick that the other players have to copy, such as a seat drop, knee drop, jump three times, or anything they can imagine.

Survivor: Create endurance contests to see who can, for instance, do the most seat drops in a row, or a pattern of bounce, seat drop, bounce, seat drop, or any other jumping contest. This game becomes more fun when the other players and spectators count out as loudly as they can.

As you can see, playing games on your water trampoline will extend the fun and offer opportunities for endless creativity. Just be sure that all participants always wear a life vest and are supervised by a competent adult for safety, then let the games begin!
